To work with Big Data – Data Visualisation Techniques in Traffic Engineering

Big Data is being generated all the time by a network of devices, mostly without our knowledge. This source of data, when used correctly and safely, can change the way we as professionals operate and has the potential to unlock otherwise unseen trends, issues and opportunities.

In transportation engineering, Big Data is showing us how people move, vital information for the future planning of new transportation infrastructure and services. In the past, the collection of data on the movement patterns of the population required intensive surveys, expensive traffic studies and many, many man-hours. Now, with Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT), we have a view to these patterns at the click of a button.

This presentation will unpack the way that Big Data is changing the way that transportation engineering is done, considering the research being done at the Stellenbosch Smart Mobility Lab where we are using Big Data to identify and solve transport related issues in a developing country context. This presentation will also consider the importance of data visualisation when working with Big Data in order to get the most out of the data available to us.
